Customs in Germany

Because Germany is a part of the European Union, if you are sending parcels from a country within the EU there are no duties or taxes applied. However, if you are shipping to Germany from outside the EU there are some duties and fees that may be applied to your package. This is not the case if the value of what you are sending is below €22. If your shipment is worth more than €22 but less than €150, then customs duties are applied, but there are no taxes

With the exception of our timed delivery services, we deliver between 9am and 7pm on normal working days. If your first delivery attempt is unsuccessful, we make another two attempts before the parcel is returned to you.

Sending Gifts to Germany

When you're sending gifts to Germany from a non-EU country, there are several exemptions in place. If your shipment is worth €45 or less, there are no duties or taxes applied in clearing customs. If they are worth more than €45 but less than €700, there is a flat duty rate of 17.5% of the package's value applied. If it is worth more than that, there are no exemptions in place and you have to pay duties and taxes as normal. If duties or taxes are applied, the recipient will be contacted to pay the fees before the package is cleared from customs. If you are sending from a country within the EU, there will be no duties or taxes applied.

When sending gifts, it can be tempting to be deliberately vague so the contents are a surprise for the recipient. However, this can cause problems in clearing customs, so make sure to properly declare your goods.

Sending Luggage
or Excess Baggage to Germany

With Fastlane®, shipping personal effects and luggage is as simple as making a booking. Whether you're sending your belongings to a new home in Cologne or your suitcases to a hotel in Hamburg, Fastlane® makes it simple. Just be sure to properly package your goods – we can't guarantee that wheels or exteriors of luggage won't be damaged in transit.

You should also bear in mind that you cannot send medicine as personal goods, and may be expected to provide a copy of your passport in order to clear the goods from customs.

Important points of note:

  1. To send goods as personal effects, they must be products that are used solely by one person – like jewellery or clothing.
  2. If goods are used by multiple people in a household they are 'household effects', which are treated differently to personal effects when clearing customs.
  3. If you plan to send personal effects to Germany, bear in mind that you may need to complete extra paperwork to clear customs.

Large Parcel and Air Freight to Germany

Want to send something cumbersome to Germany? Fastlane® are experts in large parcel shipping – with our pallet shipping and German air freight services we can deliver bulky packages that are up to 270cm in length and 1,000kg in weight. If you're planning on shipping an oversized package to Germany then make sure you keep in mind that collection of packages that are heavier than 50kg will need to be booked 24 hours in advance, and you may be required to be on hand to offer assistance in loading or unloading the shipment.

Sending food to Germany

Christmas isn't the only time of the year that your friends in Germany might be craving some food from home. There are a couple of extra rules and regulations to keep in mind when sending something delicious, but if you stick to Fastlane's guidelines then they'll be sucking Werther's in no time!

There are a couple of unusual restrictions when sending food to Germany

  • Potatoes are not allowed to be imported into Germany
  • Certain vitamin supplements are considered medicine in Germany, so cannot be sent
  • If you're not sure this applies to your shipment, be sure to contact German customs before sending it.

Packaging your Parcel

Over the course of its journey a parcel will be handled multiple times, so to ensure that it arrives in the same condition it left in, it's important to make sure that it is properly packaged.

To that end, there are three key things you need to be aware of when packing your parcel:

1. A STRONG BOX

New boxes are better than used, as they will not be weakened by damage from previous trips. Old boxes may have structural weaknesses that could lead to bursting or being crushed in transit. If your item is more than 10kg then a double-lined cardboard box will give added support.

Safely packaging a parcel for international shipping

2. PLENTY OF PACKAGING

Your items should be able to survive a drop from chest height; this means that they need plenty of cushioning. Wrap them individually, then suspend them in packaging, such as parcel peanuts, so that they're at least 6cm from the box sides.

3. TAPE TO TRAVEL

Using strong packaging tape create a Union Jack pattern around your parcel, wrapping the tape three times around so that it covers corners and joins. Make sure your shipping label is the only label on the package and is displayed clearly.

FAQ's

Can I send food to Germany?

Yes, you can ship food to Germany with Fastlane®. However, when doing so you should keep in mind that you cannot send anything homemade or perishable. Any food being sent by courier must also be store bought and in the original packaging.

Who applies customs charges?

Duties and customs are not applied to shipments from within the EU, but if a parcel is being sent from outside the European Union, duties and taxes are applied by the German customs department – this is a government agency and has nothing to do with Fastlane®.

Is there anything that I can't ship to Germany?

There are several items that Germany do not allow into the country. Some of them are specific to the country, which you can see on their English Restricted Items list, and others are general bans from couriers – for example, you cannot send Perfumes or Aftershaves by courier, as they are considered hazardous goods. You can see what you cannot send by courier on Fastlane's restricted and prohibited items list.

Will I have to pay duties and taxes if I ship my luggage to Germany?

As long as you are shipping from within the EU, you will not be charged duties and taxes on shipments of personal goods – which includes luggage. If you are shipping from outside the European Union however, and your luggage is worth more than €150, duties and taxes will be charged.

If I want to send a gift, will I have to pay any extra charges?

Like a normal parcel, there will be no extra charges on gifts sent from within the EU. For other shipments however, there is a gift exemption for packages worth less than €45. For gifts worth more than €45, duties and taxes will be charged as normal.

Can I send business goods like eBay parcels?

Yes. In fact, Fastlane® is ideal for your shipping needs on sites like eBay, since you can obtain quotes for exactly how much your shipping will cost before you even list the items. And if you're looking for a courier that can work with your small or medium business' shipping needs, look no further.

Which carriers does Fastlane® work with?

Fastlane® only works with the very best couriers from around the world, so you know that your parcel is in the best possible hands. Our carrier partners include TNT, DHL, UPS, FedEx and DPD.

Why should I ship with Fastlane®?

When you send with Fastlane®, you'll always get the best possible service. We offer door to door tracking and a signature proof of delivery, all for more than 60% cheaper than booking directly.

Can I ship very big items with Fastlane®?

Yes. We specialise in shipments of up to 1,000kg in weight through our air freight services. Our large and heavy service ships goods that are not on pallets, and can take packages as long as 270cm and as heavy as 70kg.

Do delivery times to rural locations in Germany take longer?

Areas like Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt, the Mueritz National Park and Neustrelitz take longer to delivery due to their remote location, however we'll always provide you an accurate delivery date at the point of quote.
